Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect

We tend to analyze media(or other knowledge sources) critically when it reports on a domain we are knowledgeable about.

But when the same source reports on a domain we don't know much about, we treat the source as authoritative.

Example

A newspaper article on programming - we will notice many errors in it(assuming you are a programmer). If the article is about US-Russia relations, we consider it to be very accurate - because we know very little about it.
